Licensing music as an Indy Artist…

Recently I was contacted by a friend of a friend who told me of an ingenious plan he had in the works to create a new way for Indy musicians to License there music and asked if I was interested in being involved. The Plan was for a company called The Music Bed. After hearing more about Nic Carfa’s plan, I signed the paper work to license my music through Nic’s company before the web site for The Music Bed had even gone live. The idea is simple. Nic is leaving licensing music for commercial use to the other guys. Instead Hes focusing the following:

The music from The Music Bed can be used in any non-broadcast wedding and photography projects, and any non-profit or church related media. A few people that can use The music bed are: Wedding Photographers, Portrait photographers, wedding videographers, Non profit organizations, Ministries and Churches and Production companies.

I told you it was genius idea. Laws are getting more and more strict about the illegal use of copy written music. As I’m sure you’ve seen, So many videos pulled off of YouTube for the illegal use of Music lately. I even read an article last week that said, some states are pushing for the illegal use of copy written music to be considered a felony. So what happens when there a song playing on the radio behind the video of your best friends birthday party, or you want to post your wedding video on FaceBook or YouTube??? Well, You can take your chances, or You can Use The Music Bed.

The best part about it for Artists is that it costs nothing to join The Music Bed, You can cancel anytime and if Someone licenses your music through The Music Bed, its a 50/50 split between the artist and the music bed.

I have ZERO affiliation with Nic at The Music Bed, But wanted to share this information because I truly believe what he’s doing is a great thing.

Nic even Licensed a song from me for a promotional video for The Music Bed called “Hearts Unfailing” off my first EP Faithful. See the video above.

April, 2011

We officially have a new drummer… Brad Nyght formerly of the Desperation Band!

Yep, I’m officially announcing that we have a new drummer! One of my best friends in the world, Brad Nyght! The former drummer of the Desperation Band has been a great friend of mine for five years. After leaving the D Band and staring his own company www.TheBakeryStudios.com , I finally got brad and his amazing wife D to move to TX! Brad’s an amazing producer and engineer….Oh and drummer! D is an amazing singer and fashionista! Brad officially joined the band last week and I’m crazy excited! Having such a great friend and musician on the team is a dream come true. He definitely brings the band to a whole new level. And The Blonde (my wife) loves to hang with D! Welcome to the band Brad!

Check out www.TheBakeryStudios.com if you need a project done right!

March, 2011

We’ve Been in the studio recording the new record!

So, we started recording the new record in December! We started off in Irving Bible studio. Jeff runs that place and does a fine job. First I tracked some scratch vocals, Then Clint tracked his drum parts. Drew laid down his bass lines, then I laid down my rhythm electric tracks and the acoustic tracks. That took us about a week. Brad Nyght engineered the sessions and I produced them. It was a great experience. Smooth and no issues. By the end all but lead guitars and vocals were done for four tracks were really excited about. In April we went back into the studio. This time we used the www.relicfederation.com studio. Levi Smith runs its. He’s a great guy and it’s a great space. Toby laid down all his lead electric guitar parts and did a great job. Then I had Grant Pittman come in and lay down some B3. He was great and super easy to work with. Brad laid down some percussion and that was that. This Month I’ll be going back in there to record vocals. I need to find a mix guy…. Maybe that will give us an excuse to go out to California. Lol. After that and mastering, the first four songs for the new record will be done!

check out www.relicfederation.com for a great studio and great music.

Just got a Full Artist Endorsement from JHS Pedals.

So as the tile of this post states, Im now endorsed by JHS Pedals. Their pedals are pretty amazing. I’ve spent 16 years dialing in my sound. I’ve been through more gear than I want to think about, then sold on ebay. In the past, my mistake has been, making things to dificult. Maybe a rig works great in the studio, but live takes a masters in nano tech to use. But thats all part of the process of finding “Your sound” JHS has helped bring an edge to my tone. They custom made me 11 hand built pedals including a boost pedal I called “The Blonde” and a one of a kind 3 in 1 drive called “The Luke Huch” Ha! The fun part is customizing each pedals colors, knobs and functions.

I have a dangerous imagination. Ask Phil Wickham.

Ok, So Ive never met Phil Wickham…. Yet, But Since I have a show with him in Austin on Saturday, December 4th, I will soon. Let me just say, I’m honored to open for Phil. He’s had a huge impact in my life through his music. Crazy thing is, about two months ago, I was asked to play a show with Phil. Of course I said yes. Then about a week after that, someone sent me a link to a comment I’d left on Phil’s blog about 1 1/2 years ago. The comment basically said “Hey Phil, you rock. Hope to open for you soon.

The moral of the story kids? Your imagination is more powerful that you can even imagine. Dream on.

Oh, and come to the show!

Did I really just release a Christmas Album?

I just finished recording my first Christmas album! The Album is called “DRUMMER BOY” and is made up of eight of my favorite Christmas songs. I recorded the record at my home studio, KAIROS MEDIA PRODUCTIONS STUDIOS, in 8 days! (Of course the planing took a lot longer than that.) I’m so stoked on how this album came out and I cant wait for you to hear it. Guess we’ll be spending the holidays together!

Here’s a little inside info. A little insight into my world. Recording records takes a ton of time. There’s so much Preparation. Choosing songs, writing, arranging, scheduling, Photo shoots, Who’s gonna play on the record, How much everything will cost, trying to cut those cost in half, trying to raise the money. Then there’s the question of where your going to record. In this case I decided to do the record in my home studio. A couple years back I had quite a serious collection of Studio gear. That’s how I was able to do my EP, Faithful. Then I sold most of it except for what I needed to do simple demos from Home. Ill explain why another time. Anyway, When I decided to do a Christmas record, I realized for the price of going into a full blown studio, I could re invest into my own studio and get it back up to the level I think is needed to release professional projects. So, that’s what I did. The difference between this time and last time I built a studio is that this time I took a more simplistic approach. In a nut shell, I run Pro tools LE, on a Mac. No out board gear.

I’m normally one who wants everything to be perfect in order to do something. It was really fun to see how quality a project I could put out with a minimal amount of gear. Here’s the formula I used this time

Preparation + Your best + What resources you have + talented friends = Something to be proud of you could easily have said, “Ugh, I don’t have time to do a Christmas record.

Where theres a will, Theres a way.
